Natively using a wired PS3 Dual Shock 3/Sixaxis Controller with supported devices, one can avoid rooting or pairing. All you need is a device with USB-Host capability and a connection cable (USB-OTG cable is needed for devices without a built-in USB Host port).
Use the controller you enabled with games and mapping tools supporting native controllers. It will spare you the trouble of rooting and free you from matching the controller between devices. One typical issue is inadequate device power; in such situation, a powered USB hub is required. Not least among other things, incompatibility results from insufficient Sixaxis support in Firmware.
Tips for General Troubleshooting:
Make sure your PS3 controller uses a USB cord. Though buttons won't work, Windows should identify and add Windows as a new gamepad when hooked into a PC. Test your OTG cable's compatibility with your device using a USB keyboard/mouse.
Make sure any adjacent PS3 (or other device you have linked with the controller) is off; else, the controller may attempt to connect to those devices via Bluetooth.
If you have ever installed any other programmes that directly interface with the PS3 controller, you may have to delete them.
