A new feature in the most recent edition of Minecraft is called Add-Ons. With Add-Ons, you can change the mobs' characteristics and behaviours as well as the worlds, thereby creating new game types.
Like skins, but without hacks, mods let you make new worlds and alter the appearance of mobs.
